Neighbourhood officers in St Matthews in Leicester have brought some early Christmas cheer to local elderly residents.

On Monday (December 15) officers helped to organise a Christmas party for 20 elderly residents at the Contact Project Youth Centre in MacKenzie Way.

A traditional Christmas dinner was served which was paid for by money donated to the Tenants' Association Elders Project' by Leicestershire Constabulary's Police Property Fund.

In addition to this, on Thursday (December 19) officers delivered food parcels to 30 elderly residents on the estate.

The Elders Project is run by Jean Williams from the St Matthews Tenants' Association, who also cooked the Christmas meal. Jean said: "The Elders Project is very grateful for the money donated by the police and this week has been a great success. I hope the elderly residents enjoy their parcels which were made up from donations from local agencies on the St Matthews and local police officers. The St Matthews community look after and care for their elderly residents, especially at this time of year."

Sergeant Gemma Streather from the St Matthews neighbourhood policing team said: "Local agencies and the police have worked hard this week to ensure the elderly residents have enjoyed a Christmas meal and received a food parcel. There is tremendous community spirit in St Matthews and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone on the estate a very happy Christmas."

Resident Rene Ayres said: "I have been coming to the Elder's Christmas Party for 15 years. This year was good as so many residents came and the meal was lovely."

Georgina Boat added: "This was my first Christmas Party with the Elders Project. It has been such a lovely day, everybody has made it so nice and we all enjoyed it so much."
