Man jailed after faking own kidnap

Jailed: Sukhi Singh Lally
A man who faked his own kidnap has been sentenced to three month's imprisonment after pleading guilty at Leicester Crown Court today (Thursday December 18, 2008).
Mr Sukhi Singh Lally (29) from the Stadium Estate, Leicester was charged with blackmail and wasting police time after a major investigation was launched when it was reported that he had been kidnapped.
The incident happened on Monday September 22, 2008 when Lally's wife, who was staying with relatives in another county, began receiving text messages demanding money for the safe return of her husband. It was reported to police and an investigation was launched.
Following an extensive operation Lally was found safe and well at 9.30pm at a relative's house in Leicester.
During the intensive investigation which lasted around 13 hours more than 60 police officers and police staff worked on the enquiry which added up to around 600 hours of police time.
Detective Superintendent Stuart Prior, from the Major Crime Investigation Section, said: "We take reports of this type of crime extremely seriously and adhere to strict national guidelines.
"This incident not only caused Lally's family tremendous distress but diverted valuable and costly police resources to deal with an incident that was totally fabricated.
"This case clearly shows that we are committed to putting people like this before the courts to answer for their actions."
