Residents in Beaumont Leys offered Christmas crime prevention tips

Officers from Beaumont Leys local policing unit are taking action to help ensure that residents can enjoy a crime-free Christmas and New Year.

Throughout December the police are focussing their efforts on hot spot areas for vehicle crime and burglaries. As well as providing crime prevention advice and literature to residents, they are also offering to property mark valuables free-of-charge with Smart Water.

Sergeant Paula Line who is leading the campaign said: "Being a victim of car crime or burglary is a terrible experience at any time of the year, but it can be especially distressing at Christmas.

"We don't want anyone's festivities to be spoiled by thieves. Therefore officers have been targeting specific areas over the last three weeks to raise awareness of vehicle crime and burglary and simple crime prevention measures that residents can take. These include not leaving any items on show in their vehicle and ensuring that all doors and windows are secure every time they leave their home.

"We have enlisted the support of Halfords on Abbey Lane, which has supplied us with discounted ice scrapers to be distributed in crime prevention packs in the community. The packs also include stickers warning car thieves that no valuables are inside the vehicle and sat nav cleaning pads with crime prevention advice on them.

"We are also offering to mark resident's valuables with Smart Water. This solution can easily be applied to property and shows up when an ultra violet light is shone across it. Smart Water acts as a deterrent to thieves and, in the event that the property is stolen and recovered, the item can be identified and traced back to the owner.

"I would like to wish everyone a safe and crime-free Christmas. Follow our advice and if you see any suspicious activity in the area then please call the police immediately."

If you have any information about vehicle crime or burglaries in the Beaumont Leys area, please call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
