Officers from Leicestershire Constabulary's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision on the M1 motorway which involved six vehicles.
The collision occurred at 10.47am yesterday (Wednesday November 12, 2008) on the M1 northbound just north of Junction 20 at Dunton Bassett and involved a white LGV, a black Volkswagen Golf, a white Mercedes Sprinter van, a DAF LGV, a silver Vauxhall Meriva and a yellow DAF LGV.
The driver of the Golf received fatal injuries. She is believed to be a woman in her forties and is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the yellow DAF LGV was not injured. All other drivers received minor injuries and were treated at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
The northbound carriageway at junctions 19 and 20 was closed to allow for the emergency services to deal with the incident and for officers to carry out their investigations into the collision. It was closed for several hours.
Officers investigating the collision are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed it or saw any of the vehicles being driven beforehand to contact them.
Detective Constable Simon Horton, who is investigating the incident, said: "At the time of the collision the area was congested due an earlier incident on the carriageway and traffic was slow moving.
"It's essential we build up a complete picture of events so if you witnessed the collision, the events leading up to it or saw any of the vehicles beforehand please urgently get in touch."
