Information on Leicestershire

Leicestershire Constabulary are investigating a second fatal collision on the M1 northbound.

The first collision happened at around 8.16am this morning (November 12) close to the Leicester Forest East Services. A woman was confirmed dead at the scene and has not yet been formally identified.

The M1 reopened at Junction 21 shortly after 1pm and traffic is now being allowed access to the M1 northbound from the M69 and Leicester junction.

However, the M69 is still heavily congested and motorists would be advised to continue to find alternative routes until the congestion has eased.

The second collision happened at around 10.45am just north of Junction 20 and involved six vehicles. One person was killed and a number of people injured.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are at the scene conducting investigations and the northbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for at least four hours.

Police and the Highways Agency have closed junction 19 and 20.

Traffic travelling northbound from the south is being diverted off at junction 19 onto the M6, M42 and A42 to rejoin the motorway at junction 23a.

No traffic is being allowed onto the motorways at junctions 20 so people from the Lutterworth and areas are being advised not to use these junctions to commute.

The southbound carriageway of the M1 is unaffected but traffic is backing up due to people slowing at the scenes of the collisions.
