The wife of a police officer who suffered a suspected heart attack while on his beat has called his colleagues ‘life savers' after they gave him emergency resuscitation in Hinckley town centre.

PC Mike Smith was on his patrol in the early hours of Saturday morning (November 8) when he suddenly collapsed. His colleagues, who have been fully trained in first aid, recognised the signs of a cardiac arrest and gave Mike lifesaving resuscitation until the ambulance crews arrived.

His wife Stella said: "Everyone who was with Mike that night are heroes. They saved his life.  I can't emphasise how much me and Mike appreciate all the help he received from his fellow police officers, the Street Pastors that were in town and members of the public.

"We owe them a debt we can never repay. I'm just so happy he is here with us now. I've been told the Street Pastors that work in town on the weekend, went back to their church to pray for Mike and us. It just shows the kindness of some people.

"I would like to thank those people that helped him and everyone at the Hinckley police station for the support they have shown."

Inspector Martyn Ball, Commander of the Hinckley local policing unit, said: "Mike is in a stable condition in the George Eliot hospital now. I've been to see him and he wanted me to pass on his thanks to everyone who looked after him.

"I would also like to say how proud I am of the officers working alongside Mike who gave him emergency treatment before ambulance crews took him to hospital.

"The whole team at the Hinckley local policing unit wish him a speedy recovery and would like to offer any support they can to him and his family."
