Information on Leicestershire

A total of 33 cars were checked by police in Leicester this morning (Monday November 3) as part of an operation targeting vehicles with excessively tinted windows.

Officers from the Road Policing Unit carried out the enforcement operation on Abbey Lane between 8am and 11.30am.

The law states that front windscreens must allow 75 per cent of light to be transmitted through them, and the front windows 70 per cent of light. If the tint exceeds this it can seriously reduce visibility and put the driver and passengers, as well as other road users, at risk.

During the morning, 19 of the 33 vehicles checked by officers were found to have excessively tinted windows. In two cases the tint allowed less than 25 per cent of light to be transmitted. The drivers of these vehicles were both given a £60 fine and three points on their licence. Thirteen drivers were issued with £30 fixed penalty notices and the other four were given verbal cautions.

A number of fixed penalty notices were also issued for other offences including motorists not wearing seatbelts or using their mobile phones whilst driving. One vehicle was recovered by the police for no insurance and three vehicles were issued with prohibition notices due to vehicle defects. This means that the vehicle is prevented from being driven any further until the defect is rectified and the vehicle has passed an MOT rest.

Sergeant Terry Gee said: "We continue to be surprised by the number of motorists who are willing to modify their vehicles at a cost to their own safety and that of other road users.

"We were also very surprised that the drivers we spoke to were unaware of the law regarding tinted windows. We will continue to raise awareness of this over the coming months and will be holding more enforcement operations.

"We would urge any driver who is concerned that their windows are illegal to contact us to have them checked."

Any driver who wishes to have their tinted windows checked to ensure that they are legal is urged to call Leicestershire Constabulary's Road Policing Unit on 0116 248 2017 to arrange an appointment.
