The majority of Special Police Constables (SPC) across the North Area will be patrolling alongside their regular colleagues this Halloween to mark National Specials Weekend.
The weekend is held every year to highlight the valuable contribution that volunteer special constables make to policing local neighbourhoods and communities. The chosen theme for this year relates to combating instances of anti-social behaviour prevalent during the Bonfire night/Halloween period. As a consequence the National Specials Weekend has been extended so as to incorporate both Halloween on 31st October 2008 and Bonfire Night on 5th November 2008.
All Specials across the North Area, which includes Loughborough, North West Leicestershire, Charnwood, Melton and Rutland, have been asked to work during the week of October 31st or on the night itself. They will be patrolling areas known to have problems last year in a bid to combat Halloween related anti-social behaviour.
All seven of Melton's Special Constables will be patrolling on the night.
The Acting Area Officer for the North Area, AO 5123 Ash Lodhia said; "Not every Special Constable is able to work on the night itself but I am really pleased that the majority of Specials from all five police stations across the North have offered to work on the night and delighted that every one of the seven SPC's in Melton will be working. They will be out on patrol, on foot and in cars, helping to ensure that trick or treaters don't get out of hand and upset local residents. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable night."
Leicestershire Constabulary has also produced posters which people can put in their window warning trick or treaters they are not welcome which are available from police stations.
Anyone thinking about becoming a Special Constable can apply for a detailed information pack and application form by contacting the Special Constable's Recruitment Team on 0116 222 2222 Ext: 2062 or log on to www.leics.police.uk/careers.
