Street Pastors are coming to Melton Mowbray.
The project, which has been set up by an alliance of churches, the police and local Community Safety Partnership, is being launched today (Tuesday 28th October) at 4pm at the Samworth Centre.
Street Pastors are an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems. They engage with people on the streets, mainly in the evenings, to care, listen and speak to them. They consist of church leaders, ministers or members of the church with a concern for society, specifically young people who may feel excluded or marginalised. The pastors go out into the community and offer support and guidance and build trust in the community.
Inspector Nigel Peters, Commander of Melton Local Policing Unit, said; "Street pastors have, in other areas, changed the atmosphere on the streets during the night time economy. My hope is that this can happen here in Melton Mowbray and we will see the benefits of reducing violence in the town. I am delighted that this scheme is developing in Melton. The Street Pastors scheme is supported by the Community Safety Partnership (MASCP) and we are also trying to increase the number of volunteers here at Melton who can support the CCTV system which is another tool in our armoury in reducing violence on the streets."
Cllr David Wright Chair of the Community Safety Partnership (MASCP) said; ‘'We hope to see a drop in crime in areas in the Borough where there is a problem. We want to see support and trust across all areas of the community and make Melton a safe and secure place to live, socialise and work. The MASCP is working in conjunction with partners and are extremely pleased to support this scheme.''
