Information on Leicestershire

Forty two vehicles were stop checked by police in Castle Donington on Sunday evening (October 19) during an operation to disrupt ‘car cruising' in the area.

The operation, which was carried out by the neighbourhood team for Castle Donington in conjunction with the Force's Road Policing Unit, was in response to concerns from local residents regarding the number of young motorists regularly gathering in the area on Sunday evenings.

A total of 42 vehicles believed to be taking part in the car cruise were stopped by officers. As a result of checks carried out, a total of 13 motorists were issued with vehicle defect rectification notices for a variety of offences including defective number plates and lights. This requires the motorist to fix the fault within 14 days.

The windscreen on one vehicle posed such a danger that officers issued a prohibition notice which prevents the car from further use until the problem has been fixed and the car had passed an MOT test.

Six £30 fines were issued for excessively tinted windows or misrepresented number plates. One driver also received a £60 fine and three points on their licence for speeding and a further two were given police cautions for minor offences.

Inspector Chris Brown from North West Leicestershire local policing unit said: "Anti-social behaviour caused by car cruisers in the area is having a negative impact on the community in Castle Donington.

"This was a targeted operation to tackle this problem following many complaints from local residents about noise, speeding and other traffic offences.

"We believe that Castle Donington has been chosen as a meeting place by car cruisers because of its easy access from the M1. Officers will continue to monitor the situation and deal firmly with those motorists committing offences or causing a nuisance on our roads."

PC Tony Bunker from the Road Policing Unit added: "This operation should send out a strong message that anti-social behaviour on the roads of Leicestershire will not be tolerated. People who travel to Leicestershire to commit such offences will be dealt with in a fair but firm manner."
