Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was robbed of his company's takings.
The incident happened at around 12 noon on Friday October 17 as the 65-year-old man was taking the money to the bank. It's a trip he's made a number of times for many years.
He was driving along Victoria Park Road and as he got close to the pedestrian crossing near St Leonards Road the vehicle in front of him slowed and stopped suddenly for no apparent reason.
At the same time a man came to the passenger side of the victim's car, smashed the window with what is believed to be a hammer and grabbed the bag of takings from the passenger seat. The victim struggled with the man and was then hit on the head. He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for stitches to a head wound.
The suspect then ran off along St Leonards Road and was followed by a member of the public who chased him for some time along Howard Road, Hartopp Road, Clarendon Park Road and Lytton Road, Avenue Road Extension and Lorne Road before losing him on Greenhill Road.
The suspect is described as aged 23 to 30-years-old, Asian with a wide face and stocky but athletic build. He also had a tidy, closed cropped beard. He was wearing a dark hooded top and dark clothing.
Detective Constable Louise Rooke who is investigating the incident said: "The suspect was chased for sometime by a man who runs marathons and didn't appear to be slowing, suggesting he was quite fit himself. We're therefore keen to speak to anyone who knows someone who matches the description, particularly if they like to keep themselves fit.
"We're also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the robbery or events leading up to it. It may be no coincidence that the vehicle in front of the victim's car slowed down directly before the robbery.
"We feel that there's probably someone out there who knows more about this robbery and who is behind it. We'd like to urge them to come forward and speak with us. The victim is a lovely man who was just doing his job like he's always done. He's understandably been left quite shaken by this incident.
"We want to give this man some comfort by finding those responsible so if you do know something either call us directly or take advantage of Crimestoppers which is free and totally anonymous."
