School children in Northfields have been sworn in as ‘Cop Stars' to help reduce crime in their neighbourhood.
Neighbourhood beat officers have visited Merrydale Infant School and Northfield House Primary School in Leicester this week to talk to pupils about issues such as crime prevention, stranger danger and anti-social behaviour. They also handed out drawstring bags branded with the ‘Cop Star' logo and packed full of quizzes and activities about policing and crime prevention.
The school visits form part of a Home Office campaign called ‘Not in My Neighbourhood Week', which aims to increase awareness of what the police and local agencies are doing to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and make communities safer. They are also part of the build up to a multi-agency ‘Week of Action' in Northfields and Tailby which starts on Monday October 20.
PSCO Kay Simpson from the Northfields and Tailby neighbourhood policing team said: "It's really important that we engage with children and get them thinking about safety and crime prevention at a young age.
"The drawstring bags look very cool and contain lots of quizzes and pictures to colour. We hope that they will appeal to children and get them thinking about crime prevention and personal safety in a fun way. The packs also contain a UV marker pen and we hope the children will take them home to encourage their parents to mark their valuable items with their postcode."
The Northfields and Tailby Week of Action will run from Monday October 20 to Saturday October 25. It is being funded through the Safer Leicester Partnership and involves agencies such as Leicestershire Constabulary and Leicester City Council. A range of activities are planned throughout the week including clean-up days, graffiti removal, drug and alcohol awareness and a football tournament for local youngsters.
To leave a message for a member of the Northfields and Tailby neighbourhood policing team call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 and enter the voicemail number 9085.
