Leicestershire Constabulary is offering crime prevention advice ahead of the Diwali celebrations in Leicester.
This Sunday (October 12) sees the Diwali lights switch-on ceremony in Belgrave Road with up to 40,000 people expected to attend. A similar number are also expected for the Diwali Day celebrations on Tuesday October 28.
PC Alan Cook, crime reduction officer for the city, said: "Adopting some simple crime prevention measures will help to ensure that your Diwali celebrations are not ruined by an opportunist thief.
"If you are planning to attend the Diwali celebrations, we would urge you to think carefully about keeping your home and personal belongings safe."
Leicestershire Constabulary is offering the following advice:
- If you are going out, make sure all windows and doors are locked and that all jewellery, credit cards, cash or valuables are kept out of sight. It is worth postcoding all your valuable electrical equipment such as televisions, DVDs and computers and making sure your car keys are not kept close to the front or back door where they can be easily stolen.
- Leaving a radio on, drawing the curtains and switching on some lights, will make it look as though someone is in. This will act as a deterrent to opportunist thieves. You could also tell friends and neighbours you are going out and ask them to keep an eye on the house for you.
- People visiting the events should also make sure their personal possessions are safe. Bags should be carried close and zipped closed and expensive jewellery should be covered up.
Leicestershire Constabulary wishes you a safe and happy Diwali.
