Officers from Leicestershire Constabulary's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision on the M1 motorway yesterday.
The collision occurred at about 2.45pm yesterday (Tuesday October 8, 2008) on the M1 southbound just north of junction 24A and involved four vehicles, a red Scania LGV, a silver Peugeot Partner estate, a dark grey Toyota Auris and a red DAF LGV.
The driver and passenger of the Peugeot, a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman from the Leicester area, received fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the Auris were taken to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries. The driver of Scania LGV and DAF LGV were not injured.
A 74-year-old Lincolnshire man has been arrested on suspicion of causing Death by Dangerous Driving and was released on police bail pending further enquiries.
The carriageway from junctions 24 to 25 was closed to allow for the emergency services to deal with the incident and for officers to carry out their investigations into the collision. It was fully re-opened at around 9.30pm last night.
Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed it or saw any of the vehicles being driven beforehand to contact them.
PC Darren Symes-Goodman, who is investigating the incident, said: "At the time of the collision the traffic was either slowing down or stationary due to a previous minor road traffic collision on the carriageway.
"It's important we build up a complete picture of events so if you were also in that queue of traffic following the minor collision, we would like to hear from you and obviously we need to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, the events leading up to it or saw any of the vehicles beforehand.
"If you have any information regarding this incident, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please get in touch."
