Harborough District Community Safety Partnership is leading a multi agency initiative, starting next week, to help local people in Lutterworth and Broughton Astley to maintain safer and stronger communities.
National Not in my Neighbourhood Week, launching on Monday 13 October, 2008, is a Home Office initiative which aims to increase awareness of what the police and local agencies are doing to tackle crime, anti social behaviour and improve the environment.
Alan Paul, community safety manager at Harborough District Council, hopes the campaign will increase public confidence and encourage more people to engage with the council, police and other agencies.
He said: "The Not in my Neighbourhood campaign will enable us to work with a wide range of partners in a bid to improve some areas of Lutterworth and Broughton Astley.
"We'll be able to concentrate our efforts on the issues that are important to the community and hopefully it will make a big difference to residents, restore a sense of pride in the area and make life better for everybody.
"The work carried out during the week will not finish at the end of the seven days; we will continue to work with residents after the week is over to change things for the future."
On Thursday 16 October, various agencies and teams will make there way through the streets of Lutterworth and on Friday 17 the same teams will work in Broughton Astley.
The operations will commence at 8am and teams on foot will walk through a pre-set route across the towns looking for defective footpaths, risks of fire, issues with vehicles, park and landscape checks, street lighting, fly tipping, and alcohol litter.
Inspector Siobhan Barber, commander of the Harborough local policing unit said: "The teams will talk to local people and leaflet drop information sheets to residents informing them about the action week and invite them to respond raising any concerns they have about their neighbourhood.
"This will be a chance for local people to meet their neighbourhood policing team, council officers and find out about a range of local services available to them."
Local members of Neighbourhood Watch will be calling door to door to encourage new recruits. A targeted anti-social behaviour outreach youth team will be on hand in the area and there will be high profile police patrols throughout the week.
