Leicestershire Constabulary's beat team based at Leicester University campus are offering a free bicycle marking service during Fresher's Fayre week (commencing Monday September 29th).
PC Harvey Watson, of the University Campus Park beat team, is urging students to bring their NUS cards and their bicycle to the Students Union at the Percy Gee building and pick up useful crime prevention advice on how to deter bike thieves.
Students can get their bike security coded with a unique reference number and on production of their NUS cards students are urged to take advantage of a superb offer to purchase a greatly reduced, good quality "D" lock for £10 (normally £35).
The first 500 students to attend can also get a free water resistant seat cover.
PC Watson said: "Bikes can be great to get around on and can help keep you fit but you'll have to resort to walking if you don't take steps to secure your bike when leaving it unattended.
"Marking and labelling the bike with your own personal security code is a good deterrent for criminals and may even help the police to get your stolen bike back to you.
"Always lock your bike to something secure using a good quality D lock or a combination lock and never, ever leave a bike unlocked even for a few minutes.
"Becoming a victim of any type of crime can be a distressing experience. Stay alert to any suspicious activity and do not hesitate to report it. Help yourself and the police to prevent cycle theft and the detection of crime."
Do not let your bike become a target for thieves - lock it and postcode it. Students are urged to ring Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 if they see anything suspicious or dial 999 of they spot a crime in progress.
