A team of dare devil police officers from Melton Mowbray is planning to jump out of an aeroplane to raise money for charity.

The team of six officers is taking part in a tandem freefall parachute jump at Langar Airfield on Saturday 18 October 2008.  Included in that team will be an honorary member of the shift - for one day only - the North Area BCU Commander, Chief Superintendent Daimon Tilley.  They are raising money for the East Midlands Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes, a charity which supports British soldiers wounded on active duty in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

PC 1688 Spike Yeoman said; "We are calling ourselves ‘The Flying Squad' and I will be doing the jump dressed in a pink pig outfit.  Many people do things for charity that take a long time or involve a great deal of sweat and exertion...we decided to do something that would raise the maximum amount of money in the minimum amount of time and the jump takes just 8 minutes!

"Admittedly that is 8 minutes of pure terror but it is only 8 minutes, how bad can it be?  We are all part of Melton's B shift, apart from the boss, who is joining the team as a junior member for one day only and we are all doing the jump on our rest days.  Each of us has had to raise a minimum of £360 in sponsorship before we can even attempt the jump so we've all been tapping up our friends, colleagues and family."

"We chose two charities to support, the Air Ambulance because we know that it is kept in the air by charitable donations and some of us have seen for ourselves what a fantastic job it does.  And we also chose Help for Heroes because we have already helped some local soldiers serving in Afghanistan by sending them boxes filled with supplies at Christmas.

"We are also going to do the jump while wearing heart beat monitors so that we can see what happens to our heart rate before, during and afterwards.

"We would love to raise as much as possible so if anyone would like to sponsor us we would love to hear from them."

Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so by emailing mark.yeoman@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk.
