Pupils in five Leicester schools will be doing their bit to get healthy while tackling traffic and pollution as part of a new campaign.
Youngsters at primary schools in the Rushey Mead area of Leicester are being encouraged to walk to and from school, as part of the Walk To School Week campaign, which is designed to increase their awareness of the environmental and health benefits of walking and teach them about road safety.
Schools taking part include Mellor Primary School, Rushey Mead Primary School, Wyvern Primary School, Herrick Primary School and Sandfields Close Primary School.
The campaign, which is being coordinated by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire Constabulary, is taking place between Monday September 15 and Friday September 19.
Participants will receive walking diaries, bookmarks and stickers as well as certificates from the police. They'll also learn about the health and fitness benefits of walking, and the environmental issues, such as beating rush-hour congestion during the school run.
During the week, assemblies about road safety will also be given by police officers.
Leicester City Council's cabinet member for children and schools, Councillor Vi Dempster, said: "This is a big step towards encouraging children's confidence and their independence skills.
"Traffic congestion outside schools is an issue across the city and I really hope the other schools will pick up on this initiative."
PC Katie Hodgkinson, neighbourhood officer for Rushey Mead, said: "This week is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of road safety among primary school children in the area, while at the same time reducing traffic and congestion around the schools.
"Inconsiderate parking and congestion outside local schools can often put pupils in danger, and this has been raised as a concern by the community.
"As a result of these concerns, the neighbourhood policing team has identified it as a priority and we will continue to tackle congestion by enforcing parking restrictions and raising awareness among parents and carers."
