Police in Eyres Monsell are responding to concerns raised by members of the community regarding underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour on the estate.
Neighbourhood officers have been speaking with local residents to establish where the problems are. They have also written to all those involved in the sale of alcohol on the estate to remind them of their responsibilities and to promote the Challenge 21 scheme.
PC Lou Maguire from the Eyres Monsell neighbourhood team said: "Information from the community indicates that underage drinking and related anti-social behaviour is still a concern on the estate.
"We are committed to preventing under-18s getting their hands on alcohol. Underage drinking not only leads to anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, which has a very negative impact on the community, but it also makes the young people involved more vulnerable to becoming victims of crime themselves.
"Over the summer months, officers carried out test purchases at several off-licences on the estate using an underage youngster posing as a customer. Out of 26 off-licences visited in the area covered by Welford Road local policing unit, only four failed.
"However, following community concerns we have once again written to all those involved in the sale of alcohol to remind them of their responsibility in relation to selling alcohol to under-18s. We have also urged them to keep watch for adults who buy alcohol to supply to children outside the shop.
"We are also urging the community to let us know if they see any underage drinking on the estate so that we can take the appropriate action."
Anyone with information about underage drinking in Eyres Monsell is asked to call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222. To leave a message for the neighbourhood team follow the instructions and then enter the voicemail number 9092. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
* Please note some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
