A SELECTION of Leicesterâs best adventure playgrounds are to be showcased at an event in the city this week.
Delegates from councils across the UK will visit the city on Wednesday, September 17, to see some of the cityâs main adventure playgrounds as part of a fact-finding trip coordinated by Play England â a lottery-funded organisation promoting free play activities for children.
The city was chosen because of the quality of its adventure playgrounds.
Sites which the delegates will visit include Highfields adventure playground, at Spinney Hill Park; Goldhill adventure playground, on Windley Road; New Parks adventure playground, off Western Park, and Woodgate adventure playground off Tudor Road, West End. The visitors will also have the chance to talk to relevant play workers.
The visiting councils are among 20 across the UK to each received £2million of government cash to improve playgrounds. In addition, 43 other councils â including Leicester â are in line to each receive £1million after being designated as play builders.
Regional development manager for Play England â East Midlands, Richard Gott, said: âWe chose to highlight Leicester because there are so many exemplary playgrounds in the city. In fact, it was hard for us to narrow it down to just four.â
Leicester City Councilâs cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Andy Connelly, added: âItâs very pleasing that all the good work which adventure playgrounds do has been recognised, along the quality of the facilities on offer.â
Highfields Adventure Playground senior play worker, Kevin Sheriff, added: âLeicester has some well-established playgrounds and weâre very pleased and proud to be able to assist with this play tour.â
Play England works to promote well-maintained adventure playgrounds which are inclusive, welcoming and attractive, and which have accessible routes to and from schools.
