A MAJOR consultation is being launched to give people a say on school term patterns across the city for the next three years.
A number of options have been drawn up by a working party for each of the academic years 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12, and the city council is inviting parents, carers, teachers and support staff, along with any other interested parties, to give their preference on how term times should be organised.
Options in 2009/10 include having the cityâs autumn half-term break a week later than the date agreed by the county, in order to have more equal half-term lengths.
For 2010/11, options include having slightly longer autumn and spring terms and a shorter summer term, while options for 2011/12 could see half-term breaks in autumn and spring coming a week later in city schools, in order for half-term lengths to be more even.
The proposals, which have been drawn up in discussion with representatives of city headteachers and schools, reflect core principles for term date setting that ensure sufficient time in school, half terms of equal length, suitable holidays and flexible staff training days and the ability to accommodate a range of faithsâ festivals.
Leicester City Councilâs cabinet lead member for children and schools, Councillor Vi Dempster, said: âThe working group looked at county date patterns and have included these as options where it felt these would be beneficial for children in city schools.
âRegrettably the county did not consult with us over their date patterns on this occasion. However, we will naturally be looking at minimising potential difficulties but their needs of our city children must come first.
âWe are looking at a range of options which support effect teaching and learning and allow for preparation and delivery of the curriculum. Itâs important for people to have their say on this and we are very keen to hear what preferences people have.â
The consultation period runs from September 1 to 26.
