Information on Leicestershire

Nearly 100 off-licences in Leicester have been visited by undercover police over the last two months as part of a summer crackdown on underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

During July and August officers, accompanied by an underage youngster posing as a customer, visited a total of 98 premises across the city area as part of Operation Ear Drum. Of those, 19 sold alcohol to the underage customer which equates to 19 per cent.

Three of these premises will now have their alcohol licences reviewed as it was the second time they had failed a test purchase. In every other case the person who sold the alcohol to the under 18-year-old was given an on-the-spot fine of £80.

PC Jon Webb from the City Centre Violence and Disorder Team said: "These 98 test purchases formed part of a concerted effort by police in the city to prevent underage youngsters getting their hands on alcohol over the school summer holidays.

"We visited a total of 95 off-licences and three small bars and restaurants. Some of these were targeted as a result of enquiries by officers and information from members of the public which identified them as selling alcohol to underage youngsters.

"The premises visited ranged from supermarket chains to small community shops. Thirty of the smaller shops had never been subject to a test purchase by police previously and unfortunately ten failed. This clearly shows us where we need to focus our efforts in the coming months.

"I hope this campaign demonstrates Leicestershire Constabulary's commitment to tackling underage drinking and incidents of anti-social behaviour which often result from it. Over the coming months we will continue to target those involved in the sale of alcohol in Leicester to ensure that they are selling alcohol responsibly and within the law."

The test purchase operations over the summer months form part of a wider campaign, supported by Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicester City Council and Leicester City Primary Care Trust, to crackdown on underage drinking and alcohol abuse.

Anyone with information about the sale of alcohol to under-18s in Leicester can call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
