LEICESTERâS arts scene is set to receive another boost thanks to plans for a new £1 million contemporary art gallery.
The city council is considering plans to replace its City Gallery on Granby Street, with a new venue on New Walk.
Cllr Andy Connelly, Cabinet member for culture said: âInvesting in a new and larger gallery, which would be almost directly opposite New Walk Museum, will enable us to do much more across the whole of the arts and museums service.
âOne of the most exciting things about is that we would be able to build on the excellent work the gallery and museum already do with children and young people. It would provide a superb environment for children and families, giving them better access to Leicesterâs treasures, and the chance to be creative themselvesâ.
Council leader Ross Willmott said: âMembers thought that using the council building on New Walk would be the ideal solution to finding a new home for the City Gallery, which has outgrown its rented premises.
âThe new gallery would complement Curve and the Digital Media Centre, and would add to Leicesterâs reputation as a major cultural destinationâ.
The City Gallery is currently on a commercially rented shop site. The new gallery would be located in a council building formerly used as its workplace nursery.
It would feature two purpose-built gallery spaces capable of hosting national and international collections, a studio for artist-led workshops, and a drop-in space with interactive exhibitions.
The building would also house a contemporary craft shop, refreshment area, and better facilities for disabled people.
The councilâs Cabinet is being asked to back proposals to close the City Gallery when its lease expires at the end of February 2009, which would free up officers to develop the new facility ready for opening in Spring 2010.
Under the proposals, New Walk Museum would host some contemporary art exhibitions while work on the new gallery was under way.
The council would provide most of the funding for the new gallery, with around £120,000 expected to be available from from the Arts Council.
The Cabinet meets on Monday 1st September, at Leicester Town Hall.
