Knife arch detector has sharp success
Posted on 21/08/08

Officers in Hinckley have hailed their knife arch scheme a "significant deterrent" forcutting down town centre violence.
The metal detecting arch which was set up outside Elements nightclub in Hinckley town centre last weekend saw around 600 people pass through it - and no-one was found to be carrying an offensive weapon.
Insp Martyn Ball, commander of the Hinckley local policing unit, said: "This is another successful initiative to help us keep reducing town centre violence and reassuring the public.
"This is a significant deterrent and we want to send the message out that carrying an offence weapon around with you is an arrestable offence.
"We are responding to the concerns of the community. We want to reassure members of the public that, all though we have very low incidents of knife crime, we want to keep it that way.
"The proprietors of the nightclub have been working in complete cooperation with the police and if anyone refused to walk through the knife arch they would not be allowed to enter the club."
Hinckley officers have been running this scheme in conjunction with their Safer Summer campaign which is aimed at targeting anti-social behaviour and violent crime.
Insp Ball continued: "The Hinckley and Bosworth community safety partnership, of which the police are a part of, have been running the Safer Summer campaign.
"This campaign is not about stopping people having fun. We want to ensure everyone enjoys the summer months safely and free from fear.
"All we are saying to people is have fun, keep safe, think of others and stay within the Law."
