Free swimming for all

Posted on 20/08/08

SWIMMERS across Leicester are being offered free use of city council-run swimming pools in celebration of Team GBs Olympic success.

Free swimming will be available to all visitors to any Leicester City Council leisure centre on Sunday, August 24, from opening time until 2pm.

The move is to celebrate East Midlands swimmer Rebecca Adlingtons double gold medal win in the Beijing Olympics, and to encourage as many new people as possible to participate in the sport.

The Mansfield-based teenager, who is taking part in her first Olympics, became the first woman to win a British swimming gold medal for nearly 50 years.

Council organisers hope budding swimmers from across the city will continue the celebrations by joining thousands of other fans taking part in the Sports Fest events in Leicester city centre, on August 23 and 24.

The weekend of events will culminate in the ceremonial handover of the Olympic torch from Beijing to London, ahead of the 2012 games, which will be shown on the specially-erected big screen in Humberstone Gate on Sunday.

People will also be able to watch the raising of the Olympic flag in Leicester, and take part in the Sing The Nation event, which will unite choirs and community groups from across the city.

Leicester City Councils Olympic envoy, Councillor Rory Palmer, said: This has been a great Olympics for Team GB, and I know everyone in Leicester will want to join me in congratulating all our medal winners.

This free swim offer on Sunday is a great way to celebrate our Olympic success.

Getting more people to do exercise and sport is one of our top aims for the 2012 Olympic legacy, and this is the perfect way to kick off Leicesters 2012 celebrations.

I would encourage everyone to join in the fun and celebrate the magic of the Olympics.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.
