Cash boost for community groups in St Matthews

Posted on 19/08/08

Two community groups from the St Matthews Estate in Leicester have been given a cash boost by the police.

The St Matthews Tenants' Association and the Contact Project have been given a donation from Leicestershire Constabulary's Police Property Fund after their work on the Estate was highlighted by local PCSO Simon Johnson.

Every six months the Deputy Chief Constable, Mr David Lindley, donates the money received from the sale of unclaimed stolen property to registered local charities.

The St Matthews Tenants' Association, which does a lot of good work with elderly and vulnerable people, received 200. The Contact Project, which works with children and young people between the ages of five and 19 who live on the St Matthews Estate, was given 250.

Jean Williams from the St Matthews Tenants' Association said: "We really appreciate this money from the police. It will be used to pay for our Christmas dinner which is held every year for the elderly people on the estate and with this extra money that we weren't expecting we will be able to invite more people. It is something the older members of the community really look forward to and this year it will be even more special."

Project Manager Nikki O'Brien from the Contact Project said: "The Contact Project really appreciates the donation from the police. The young people have suggested that they would like to put it towards a residential trip away and if possible would like to be accompanied by members of the neighbourhood policing team."

Sergeant Gemma Hudson from the St Matthews neighbourhood team said: "These two charities do so much good work for the St Matthews' community, from helping children and young people to assisting and visiting elderly residents. They both offer excellent services and are extremely committed to helping the community."
