CHILDREN of all ages will be taking part in a programme of family fun and enticing events taking place in the heart of old Leicester.
The past will be brought to life in a colourful programme of have-a-go workshops, arts and crafts events and outdoor shows at this yearâs Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival, which takes place from August 18 to 25.
Children will be able to learn about the cityâs past from Roman times, through medieval days up to the Victorian era, with a wide variety of attractions, many of which are free.
Highlights include the Family Fun Day in Castle Gardens on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, which features attractions including walkabout performers, jesters, Pongo the eight-foot Odobee bird and a huge dragon, along with music, narrow boat rides, medieval knights and Maypole dancing.
There will also be the ever-popular Woodland Fun Show, in which children can contribute to a giant mural, try circus skills, story-telling and visit a Leicester City Librariesâ Book Bus.
Throughout the week, a variety of vibrant, exciting events aimed at children and younger visitors will also take place.
Youngsters can make their own hats or helmets and take part in quizzes looking at the era of Roundheads and Cavaliers, on Monday, August 18, at the Guildhall.
St Mary De Castro church will host a childrenâs art and craft morning on Tuesday, August 19, which will also include a baby prom, where youngsters get the chance to find out about early musical instruments from a strolling minstrel.
Newarke Houses Museum will host a teddy bearâs picnic, face painting and a contest to find the biggest and smallest bears, on Wednesday, August 20.
On Thursday, August 21, St Mary De Castro church will host a colourful and exciting childrenâs art and craft morning, with a chance for children to make medieval armour and coats of arms, and hear storytelling and music from John the Jester and Mop the Musician. Also on Thursday, The Guildhall will host a medieval fun fayre, involving crafts, storytelling, face painting and fun with Sylvesta the Jester.
Youngsters aged eight and over will be able to get their hands dirty in the Have a Go Pottery Workshop, at Jewry Wall Museum, on Thursday, August 21, and can make their own crowns or swords at Newarke Houses Museumâs Civil War event on Saturday, August 23.
Puppets of all shapes and sizes will be the stars of the show at a colourful puppet show in Castle Gardens on Sunday, August 24, which combines the modern and historic, with animatronic puppets, clog dancers and a medieval band.
Full details are contained in festival brochures, which are available from city council libraries, the Tourist Information Centre in Town Hall Square, city council leisure centres and museums. Alternatively visit www.leicester.gov.uk/festivals
