Relive history at festival

Posted on 04/08/08

A HERITAGE and arts festival will give visitors a chance to step back into Leicesters history through a range of exciting events and activities.

From August 18 to 25, the Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival will take place in the heart of historic Leicester, bringing together music, culture, childrens events and educational workshops and talks.

History-themed events will play a major part in the festival, which looks at the varied and colourful history from Roman times, through to medieval and Victorian days.

Guided walks will take place through some of the citys most renowned historic sites. Nasty Normans, Savage Saxons and Rubbishing Romans, on August 19, will tell the story of Roman baths, Saxon warriors and Norman castles, while Dastardly Deeds and Dreadful Punishments, on August 21, will contain tales of rogues, vagabonds, thieves and murderers through the ages.

The legacy of Richard III, who rode out of Leicester on his way to his death at Bosworth Battlefield, will be the subject of a guided walk on August 22.

Newarke Houses Museum will host the Castle Park Lecture which examines the history of the Newarke, from its 14th century origins to the present day. It takes place on August 21.

Sylvesta the Jester will lead medieval games and activities at the Medieval Fun Fayre, at The Guildhall on August 21.

Other events include tours of Leicester Castle, St Mary de Castro Church, St Margarets Church and the now closed All Saints Church, as well as educational workshops looking at the Civil War, Roundheads and Cavaliers, and the history of the British Empire.

Early music concerts will also entertain visitors with sounds from the past. Gourmets Delight, which takes place The Guildhall on August 22, will see the Longslade Consort showcasing varied and wonderful early musical instruments.

The Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival will culminate in a Family Fun Day in Castle Gardens on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25.

Brochures highlighting all the festival attractions are now available from city council libraries, the Tourist Information Centre in Town Hall Square, city council leisure centres and museums.
