Information on Leicestershire

DISABLED youngsters from across Leicester are due to take part in a major sports and activities day marking the launch of a new pledge to help them.

Leicester City Council and Leicester City Primary Care Trust have signed up to the Every Disabled Child Matters Charters designed to improve services to disabled children and young people.

By signing up to the pledge, the city council and PCT are committed to drawing up plans to provide a range of services aimed at disabled children and their families.

The pledge is linked to the Governmentâs Aiming High For Disabled Children Agenda, which over the next three years promises a package of improvements, including significant increases in short break services and better information on services to disabled youngsters.

A sports and activity day will take place at Aylestone Leisure Centre and Recreation Ground, on Thursday, August 7, from 10am to 3pm, to mark the cityâs involvement in the charter scheme.

Disabled children will be encouraged to try out sports including trampolining, swimming, wall climbing, cycling and football.

There will also be a childrenâs entertainer, and arts and crafts activities, while information service InfoXchange will be available to give details of dozens of help and support organisations available in the city.

The event will also give disabled children, young people, their parents and carers the opportunity to give their views about how services and short breaks should be improved and developed in Leicester.

The official launch of the charters will take place at 12.30pm, and will be attended by Leicester City Councilâa cabinet member for children and schools, Cllr Vi Dempster, and chair of Leicester City PCT, Philip Parkinson.

Louise Franklin of the Council For Disabled People will also give a talk on developments to help disabled children and young people.

Cllr Dempster said: âImproving services for disabled children and young people is a priority for the city council, and we are delighted to commit to the Every Disabled Child Matters Charter as a way of publicly letting families know this.

âWe know there is a lot we need to do to make sure disabled children and young people are able to access the services and support they need, and we are committed to this programme of reform.â

Anyone wanting to book a place to take part in the dayâs activities or wanting further information should call the Disabled Childrenâs Inclusion Service on 0116 223 2290, 0116 229 4195 or email jayanti.gohil@leicester.gov.uk

MORE than £300,000 of improvements are to be made to six city play areas.

The city council is planning to upgrade its play areas in Braunstone Park, Evington Park, Overton Road, Sturdee Road, Westcotes park, and Thirlmere/Walnut Street.

Funding for the improvements will come from the Department for Children, Families and Schoolsâ Playbuilder fund. Leicester has been awarded £1.2million from the fund to pay for a three-year programme of work.

Cllr Andy Connelly, Cabinet member for culture said: â We are committed to improving our play areas and we will start work first on the areas most in need of improvement. Over the next three years we will create and refurbish up to 19 play areas.

CITY council leader Ross Willmott has welcomed the governmentâ s announcement that it is to fund free swimming for everyone by 2012.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.
