Information on Leicestershire

15 people have been arrested over the last four months in the South area for offences relating to distraction burglaries.

A special team has been set up in the South area dedicated to tackling distraction burglaries and in the last four months they have made nine arrests in the Harborough area, four in Hinckley, one in Blaby and one in Oadby.

Detective sergeant David Kirby, part of the distraction burglary team, said: "We are cracking down on people who commit distraction burglaries and this should send out a clear message that they will have nowhere to hide if they commit these offences.

"To keep the momentum in place, all those that have been dealt with in custody are kept up-dated about what steps Leicestershire Constabulary is taking with their investigations into distraction burglaries.

"This information is sent to the offenders on a regular basis so they are aware we are constantly monitoring them.

"Our team also meets with surrounding forces to discuss current trends, suspects and coordinated responses to tackle distraction burglary."

Of those 15 people arrested, seven have been charged with offences relating to distraction burglaries. The remaining eight have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

PC Steve Day, crime reduction officer for the South area, said: "We want to make sure elderly and vulnerable residents protect themselves against this type of crime as well. These criminals target our most vulnerable because they are trusting. Don't be trusting, be suspicious.

"We are also urging people to make their neighbours aware if they see anyone hanging around who looks suspicious. Advice like this can help protect vulnerable people from becoming a victim. If you see anyone acting suspiciously please report it to the police immediately."

South area police have this advice:

  • Always answer the door with the chain lock on. Ask the visitor what they want and ask them to provide identification. Don't be afraid shut the door on them if you think for one second they are not genuine.
  • If anybody comes to your door claiming to be from the water board or any other utility company be very suspicious. These companies do not visit homes unless a pre-arranged appointment has been made. Our advice is don't let them into your home, turn them away and contact the Police immediately by dialling 999.
  • If they do provide identification take a number and shut the door on them while you make your checks. Any genuine caller will be happy for you to do this.

PC Day continued: "Distraction burglaries are particularly distressing and many victims are left very shaken by the incident.  I would appeal to the elderly and their relatives to be very vigilant against this type of crime and not to keep large amounts of cash in their homes."

Anyone wanting more information can contact PC Steve Day, South area crime reduction officer at Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 ext 5532.
