MUSIC ranging from the medieval to the modern will be taking centre stage at an award-winning festival taking place in the heart of old Leicester.
A programme including early music, acoustic music and jazz will form part of this yearâs Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival, which takes place from August 18 to 25.
For the first time the festival also includes a series of musical fringe events in pubs and restaurants, along with a cider and cheese festival.
Major concerts include German organist Johannes Goetzâs organ recital at Leicester Cathedral, on Tuesday, August 19, at 8pm. Tickets cost £7 on the door.
Gourmetâs Delight, a performance of early music by the Longslade Consort, will involve varied and wonderful instruments including a shawm, gemshorn, crumhorns, curtal, recorders and spinet. It takes place at The Guildhall on Friday, August 22, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8/£6.
Renowned acoustic roots band, Show of Hands, featuring Miranda Sykes, plus special guest Roger Wilson, will perform at Leicester Cathedral on Monday, August 25, at 8pm. Tickets cost £16/£14.
St Mary De Castro Church will host a daily free organ recital, entitled Colours of the Organ, from Tuesday, August 19, to Friday, August 22, from 12.30pm to 1pm. Nearby St Nicholas Church will host a free coffee morning and organ recital from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday, August 23.
Elsewhere smaller free concerts will entertain pub-goers and diners across the city.
The Criterion, in Mill Lane, will host acoustic performers Carole Palmer and Chloe Vaughan, from 8pm on Thursday, August 21.
The Andy Griffiths Acoustic Combo will play at the Phoenix Arts Café, on Saturday, August 23, from 12.30pm. Later that afternoon, Oli Dickenson will play at the Criterion, from 3pm.
The day will be rounded off by live blues and roots music to accompany the Cider and Cheese Festival which takes place at the Swan and Rushes, in Infirmary Square, from 5pm to midnight on Saturday, August 23.
Colourworks restaurant, in Westbridge Close, will host live jazz from the Cool Ensemble on Sunday, August 24, followed by live jazz from Hopscotch, on Monday, August 25. Both shows start at noon and are free.
Festival brochures detailing all the Castle Park Heritage and Arts Festival events are now available from city council libraries, the Tourist Information Centre in Town Hall Square, city council leisure centres and museums.
