Information on Leicestershire

The number of people in Leicestershire who feel that their police do an excellent or good job is good compared to the national average.

The results of the British Crime Survey (BCS), which were issued today (Thursday 17 July, 2008), revealed that Leicestershire has the highest number of people rating their local policing performance as excellent or good compared with other forces in the East Midlands region.

The BCS is considered to be the most accurate barometer of crime and public perceptions of crime.

Commenting on the news, Assistant Chief Constable Chris Eyre said, "We are delighted by these findings, I believe this is due in large part to the impact of neighbourhood policing and the success and reach of the ‘A Name for Every Neighbourhood' campaign where we made residents aware of the beat officer dedicated to dealing with concerns in their local area.

"Leicestershire Constabulary was one of the first forces in the country to roll out neighbourhood policing. The 106 neighbourhoods that make up the force have a dedicated beat officer, supported now by police community support officers (PCSOs) and members of the special constabulary."

Leicestershire Constabulary's service through neighbourhood policing has earned it an ‘Excellent' grade for local policing from the Home Office for three years running.

In addition, the survey showed the number of people who agree that the police understand and deal with local concerns is also higher than the national average and is the highest in the East Midlands region.

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has experienced reduced crime figures across all categories of crime, with the exception of drug offences which have been boosted by continued operations against drug crime; in particular the run of recent successful operations cracking down on cannabis factories in and around Leicestershire. Over the past twelve months 71 factories, containing over 7,000 plants, have been identified and enforced against.

ACC Eyre said, "We are not complacent, however, and are determined to drive the number of such offences down further over the coming weeks and months.

"This year's reduction in crime in is not unique. I am proud to say that there has been a consistent, sustained long-term reduction in crime; with burglary reduced by 21.1%, theft and taking away of a motor vehicle reduced by 39.4% and robbery reduced by 28.5% over a five year period."

Leicestershire's rates of crime against a person and crime against vehicles are lower than the national average, with vehicle crime the lowest in the East Midlands region.
