Information on Leicestershire

A goat stolen from premises in Leicester last week has been reunited with its owner, thanks to some diligent police work.

‘Billy' the goat, who had a distinctive purple beard, was stolen from an address in Knighton Fields Road East, Leicester, on Tuesday July 8, 2008.

On Friday July 11, as a result of routine police enquiries, PC 1010 Chris Hill, the Agricultural and Wildlife officer for Harborough local policing unit, found Billy hidden in an isolated stable in a field near the village of Theddingworth.

Enquiries are ongoing to try to find those responsible for stealing the goat but police at Harborough are pleased to have been in a position to reunite Billy with his owner.

PC Hill said "The thieves had shaved his beard off to try to avoid detection but the owner has confirmed that it is definitely Billy and he is now back at home and comfortable. This is a good result for us and the owner and I'm just glad I could help."

He added: "Stolen livestock crimes are often difficult to solve as the animals can be shipped out of the area very quickly.  Anyone who has had an animal stolen knows that it can be a worrying time waiting to hear some news. The owners were really pleased to hear that Billy had been found safe and well.

"However, I'd still like to hear from anyone who knows anything about those responsible for this incident."

Police urge all livestock owners to be vigilant and consider the security of fields and pens where animals are kept.  Further crime prevention advice can be obtained by telephoning Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222.

Anyone with any information which could assist the investigation, is asked to contact PC Hill by telephoning 0116 222 2222.  When prompted, key in his identification number - 1010 - and leave a message.  Alternatively, you may contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

*Please note, some mobile networks may charge for this call.
