Information on Leicestershire

Signs displaying a range of vehicle crime prevention tips are being attached to lamp posts in Beaumont Leys and New Parks as part of a three-month campaign to raise awareness and reduce incidents.

The signs - which display warnings such as ‘Leave it on show, expect it to go' and ‘Thieves want your sat nav' - are being put up in the areas of Aikman Avenue, Butterwick Drive, Border Drive, Abbey Lane, Heacham Drive and Beaumont Leys Lane.

Officers will be carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to reassure the community and deter criminals. Covert patrols will also be conducted to target those people who are suspected of being involved in vehicle crime in the area.

Sergeant Steve Power from Beaumont Leys police station said: "We have seen an increase in vehicle crime in the area over the past few months and we are asking motorists and members of the community for their help to crackdown on this.

"Officers have identified particularly vulnerable areas where we will be targeting patrols. However we need motorists to assist us by not leaving any personal belongings on display in their vehicles. This includes bags and coats and in particular sat navs. We would ask motorists to always remove holders and chargers, as well as the sat nav itself, every time they leave their vehicle unattended.

"Other members of the community can also help by reporting any suspicious people or activity to the police immediately. We also want to hear from anyone with information about those responsible for these crimes or for the subsequent sale of the stolen property."

A total of 55 vehicles have been stolen and 129 thefts from vehicles reported in the area covered by Beaumont Leys local policing unit between April and June this year, compared to 38 thefts of vehicles and 116 thefts from vehicles for the same period last year.

Anyone with information about vehicle crime is urged to contact Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
