Information on Leicestershire

Police in Leicester will continue to monitor off-licences throughout the summer as part of a crackdown on underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

Test purchases were carried out at 21 off-licences in Leicester on Thursday July 3 using a 14-year-old girl posing as a customer.

The operation targeted off-licences within the areas covered by Beaumont Leys and Keyham Lane local policing units.

Out of the 21 off-licences visited, two sold alcohol to the 14-year-old girl. One of those off-licences had previously failed a similar test purchase operation.

PC Jon Webb from the City's Violence and Disorder Team said: "I hope this serves as a reminder to anyone involved in the sale of alcohol of their legal responsibilities.

"Any member of staff who sells alcohol to a customer under the age of 18 can be fined £80 on the spot. The consequences are more serious for the licence holders who may face a review of their licence.

"Although it is disappointing that two premises failed the test purchase, another two off-licences that had previously failed did ask for identification this time. Clearly some are learning from their mistakes.

"Police in the city are committed to preventing the sale of alcohol to under 18s and the anti-social behaviour that it often leads to. During this operation, officers also checked areas surrounding the off-licences for groups of young people drinking alcohol. We are pleased to say that on this occasion none were found. However police will continue to monitor this throughout the summer and respond to any information of complaints from members of the public."

Anyone with information about alcohol being sold to underage people should contact Leicestershire Constabulary on (0116) 222 2222 or alternatively call Crimestoppers which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
