Information on Leicestershire

The police in Ashby de la Zouch are urging young people in the area not to congregate in the grounds of the castle following a recent increase in reports of under age drinking, litter, and criminal damage to the castle remains.

Young people have been meeting in the grounds of Ashby Castle, which is situated off Mount Walk in the town.  Since March 28th 2008, the police have received 4 reports of criminal damage and have increased their patrols in the area.  Officers are doing hourly checks at peak times.

The grounds are private property; they belong to English Heritage, and are also covered by the town's extended Alcohol Free Zone so it is an offence to drink alcohol outside within that zone.

If anyone is found on the grounds during the police patrols, who is not authorised to be there, they will be asked to leave, their details will be taken and passed onto English Heritage who will consider prosecuting them for trespassing.

Any alcohol found to be in their possession will be confiscated and disposed of.

PC 1667 Mark Arjoo, the neighbourhood beat officer for Ashby said; "I would ask local youngsters to respect this ancient site and not to go onto the grounds. If they wish to enjoy their leisure time, please make use of the public open spaces such as Hood Park, The Bath Grounds and Western Park.  I would also urge local residents to let the police know immediately if they see anyone in the grounds after the castle has closed."

Daphne Hewitt, a Supervisor at Ashby Castle, said; "English Heritage will be working closely with the local police as they monitor vandalism and anti-social behaviour taking place in the evenings at Ashby de la Zouch Castle.  The castle is well loved by the local community and it is used regularly by local schools and children's groups.

We take any illegal activities on our sites very seriously and will continue to liaise with the police on any criminal matters arising"
