STEP OUT to celebrate summer in Leicesterâs city centre as the One Rhythm dance festival highlights ballroom and Latin dancing.

The One Rhythm Dance Festival is a colourful event with a diverse programme of themed dance performance, toe-tapping sounds and activities for the whole family.

Stepping Out celebrates popular dance from ballroom and Latin to jive and big band rhythms. Shoppers and visitors can join in the fun on Sunday 6th July in Humberstone Gate West and Gallowtree Gate at the heart of Leicester from 11am to 4pm.

The Can Can troupe get the party started at 11am in Humberstone Gate West. They are followed by The Bees Knees Charleston Girls who will step up with a display of popular dances from the roaring twenties.

Local dance groups performing include the Lindy Hop Club, Latinos, Ceroc and Havana Nights. They will also lead workshop sessions to give shoppers the chance to learn some new dance moves.

Swizzle Shakers 1940s street show will perform magical dance routines to keep the party going in Gallowtree Gate and Artizani Elvisâ ingenious street theatre will add to the party atmosphere. The Dukes Box sound system will bring dance tunes to Humberstone Gate throughout the day so that the audience can try out their newly acquired dance skills.

To top-off the party red-hot eight-piece band Fosse Central will play a mix of grooves from the â60s, â70s and â80s on the main stage on Humberstone Gate West (3pm-4pm) while the audience dances on a purpose-built dance floor.

Stepping Out is the third of six dance festival events organised for the city centre from May to October. Celebrating different forms of dance each month there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to get dancing and join in the celebrations.

Cllr Patrick Kitterick, Cabinet lead for regeneration said: âOne Rhythm Dance Festival has been very popular in May and June. For July we are looking forward to celebrating Leicesterâs local dancing talent as well as welcoming some excellent professional entertainers.

âThis is a great way to celebrate the landmark regeneration that has been going on throughout the city centre. With the completion of major projects like Highcross Leicester, CURVE and the refurbishment of the city centre streets we have a lot to celebrate in 2008â.

Other dance events in the festival include world of dance in August, and street dance in September. The festival will end in October with one of the biggest street parties ever in the city centre.

There are still performance places available at these events. Local dance schools and groups who want to get involved can contact Jenny Martin in the festival and events unit on 0116 238 5084.

One Rhythm Dance Festival is supported by Highcross Leicester, and includes a two-day dance event on 6th and 7th September to celebrate the opening of the new shopping centre.

For more details of the festival, or information for dance groups interested in taking part in future events, telephone 0116 238 5084 or go to: www.oneleicester.com/one-rhythm
