Primary school plans

Posted on 30/06/08

LANS to spend more than 150 million on Leicesters primary schools have been launched.

Cllr Vi Dempster, Cabinet member for childrens and young peoples services outlined the councils plans for a 14 year programme of investment at a meeting of all of the citys headteachers.

The city council is seeking government money to enable it to re-build or refurbish half of its 81 primary schools. The remainder will continue to receive substantial amounts of money every year to carry out building improvements.

Detailed proposals will be drawn up following consultation, but schools likely to be re-built or refurbished include Humberstone Infants and Juniors, Sparkenhoe, Marriott, Rowlatts Hill, Evington Valley, St Barnabus, Barley Croft, Rolleston and Forest Lodge.

Cllr Dempster, said: One of our top priorities for the next 25 years is to invest in our children and young people.

Added to our BSF plans for secondary schools and the money our partners are spending on local colleges, the primary school programme will bring investment in education in the city to more than 500 million over the next 10-15 years.

The council submitted its bid to the government this week. It will find out whether its plans have been approved in September.

The aim of the programme is to help to raise standards in all schools, ensure that every family can access a range of services through their local school, and make schools more environmentally-friendly.

Consultation on the detail of the programme will run from now until the autumn. Subject to government approval, spending is due to start in April next year.

The schools in the first two years of the programme are likely to include many of the schools that still have mobile classrooms to be replaced, those with a large number of surplus places, and those with dilapidated buildings.

CITY council leader Ross Willmott has welcomed the governmentâ s announcement that it is to fund free swimming for everyone by 2012.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.
