Information on Leicestershire

RESIDENTS are being asked for their views on how proposed changes to the way housing is allocated could affect them.

They will be able to take part in a survey aimed at finding out how easily theyâll be able to access a new website and newsletter which will form part of a new housing scheme.

The survey, which runs from July 1 to September 2, 2008, will ask for their views on Leicester City Councilâs new Advertise and Bid scheme which is due to come into effect in September 2009.

Advertise and Bid will allow potential tenants on the councilâs housing register to read details of all available homes via a website and newsletter, and bid for up to three of homes a week.

They will also be able to find out details of the neighbourhood, how much demand there is for a particular property, and how a decision is finally reached.

The survey will try to identify problems and barriers which could prevent people from accessing the scheme, in order to ensure no-one is discriminated against.

Details of the scheme and the survey are available on www.leicester.gov.uk/cbl

The scheme, known as choice-based letting, is being introduced by the Government to help make it easier for residents have more of a say in the way housing is allocated.

The consultation is also available at www.leicester.gov.uk/consultations

Swim scheme welcomed

CITY council leader Ross Willmott has welcomed the governmentâ s announcement that it is to fund free swimming for everyone by 2012.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.

â We are proud that Leicester was ahead of the game in offering free swimming to over-60s two years ago, and are glad to see plans to extend that offer to children and eventually all adults too.
