REVELLERS at Braunstone Carnival can get sporty as Braunstone Sports Festival is launched as part of this years carnival fun.

From 12 noon until 5pm on Saturday 5th July visitors will have the chance to try out a wide range of sports and activities including ice skating, BMX bike riding, baseball, and gladiator jousting on Braunstone Park.

Local residents will also be able to sign-up to take part in consultation on sporting plans for their local park.

Recently announced plans for a project to improve the play facilities at Braunstone Park include re-designing the former paddling-pool area to be a safe street sports area. This is the first stage of a long-term vision for the park to be a focus for sport.

The proposed 680k scheme is a partnership with Braunstone Community Association (BCA). In a recent BCA survey over 1400 local residents supported the idea for a community sports park.

Cllr Andy Connelly, cabinet lead for culture said: Im delighted that the Braunstone Carnival has expanded this year to include a local sports festival. It is a great way to give people a taste of a wide range of sports and activities. It is the perfect place for us to talk with the local community about our plans to make Braunstone Park a community sports park.

Its early days for these exciting plans, but we want to get local people on board now to give them the chance to have a say in the detailed plan.

Popular suggestions made during the initial consultation include a running path, outdoor gym, play areas for all ages and improved facilities. For the second stage consultation the project team is setting up adult, child and family consultation groups to work on the more detailed plans.

Sally Davis sports action zone manager at the BCA said: The joint project to make Braunstone Park a community sports park is very exciting and builds on the success of the Braunstone Leisure Centre. We shall be working with local people to make Braunstone a sporting community.

This is another project that will help us achieve our vision of improving the quality of life for residents of Braunstone now and in the future. To sign up for one of the sports consultation groups telephone BCA on 0870 170 6951.
