Money for sport schemes
Posted on 26/06/08

THOUSANDS of pounds of lottery money will pay for schemes to tackle obesity and encourage more volunteering in Leicester.
The citys Local Sports Alliance has been awarded over 86,000 after a successful bid to Sport England for the cash, which is designed to encourage healthier lifestyles.
The bid, which involves Leicester City Councils sports services, the primary care trust and Voluntary Action Leicester will focus on three main health and fitness themes.
A new sport and physical activity officer will encourage more people to exercise as part of a three-year scheme involving a range of different local organisations.
Voluntary Action Leicester will launch a new drive to increase volunteering, particularly in sports, in the run-up to the Special Olympics in Leicester in 2009, as well as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.
The money will also be used on campaigns to encourage healthier eating and exercise. The target is to encourage greater participation in sports over the next three years.
Leicester City Councils cabinet member for culture and leisure, Cllr Andy Connelly, said: This lottery grant is excellent news. It will help us to encourage people to live healthier and more active lifestyles.
Chairman of the Local Sports Alliance, Steve White, added: This lottery award is a timely boost for Leicester citizens.
It will promote healthy lifestyles through participation in sport and physical activity. It also taps into the volunteering community using the focus of the Special Olympics Leicester 2009 as a means of getting involved in sport.
