City street works begin
Posted on 26/06/08

IMPROVEMENTS to pavements and carriageways in part of Leicester city centre are due to begin next week.
Belvoir Street, Horsefair Street and Millstone Lane will be closed to traffic from the start of next week for improvement works as part of the ongoing regeneration of the city centre.
The work is part of the Streets and Spaces scheme to improve the city centre, and to complete the route linking all the main shopping areas.
The closure will come into force in Horsefair Street on Sunday, June 29. The other roads involved will close on Monday, June 30.
The stretch of Belvoir Street between Granby Street and Bowling Green Street will be closed for six weeks, during which new street furniture will be installed, some repaving work on footways done and the parking bays resurfaced.
BT will also be carrying out maintenance work at the junction of Belvoir Street and Granby Street at the same time.
Deliveries will be allowed from 7am and 10am despite the road closure. Other traffic will be able to use a diversion route comprising Granby Street, Bishop Street and Bowling Green Street.
Stamford Street and Albion Street will also be made two-way for traffic while the works take place.
Buses which normally stop in Belvoir Street will continue to stop at bus stops in Rutland Street and Welford Place.
In Horsefair Street and Millstone Lane, areas of pavement will be repaved and the carriageway resurfaced. The pedestrian crossing from Market Street to Hotel Street will be resurfaced.
Works are already underway, but will involve the road being closed to traffic from June 30 to the end of August.
Bus stops along Pocklingtons Walk, Millstone Lane and Horsefair Street will be taken out of use for the duration of the work.
Arriva and First bus services that normally use Horsefair Street will run direct to their normal terminus via Vaughan Way. Passengers for Horsefair Street will be able to get disembark in Oxford Street instead at the stop before Bonners Lane.
The Saturday Park and Ride service from the racecourse (Service 102) will use stop C17 in Charles Street.
For further information on any of the schemes, contact Leicester City Councils Customer Services on 0116 252 7000.
