Student Chef of the Year
Posted on 24/06/08
t news from the Leicester City Council News Centre no:328-08 date: June 24th, 2007 PUPILS from schools across the city are dusting down their recipe books and preparing for the Student Chef of the Year competition.
Teams from Riverside Business and Enterprise College, Beaumont Leys Specialist Science School, Moat Community College and Sir Jonathan North Community College will pit their wits against each other during the competition heats on Friday (27th) at Leicester College.
The Student Chef of the Year competition encourages young people to plan and prepare a lunchtime menu. The competition gives pupils the chance to be creative with food, work within a budget and promote healthy eating in schools.
Each team will have an hour and 30 minutes to create a two-course meal and have a budget of 90 pence per meal.
Last years winners were Moat Community College who scooped the prize after creating and preparing a menu of summer quiche with spicy salsa potato salad and rhubarb and ginger fool.
Annie Vesty, head of city catering, said: The Student Chef of the Year competition is a wonderful opportunity for young people to get involved in preparing and cooking food as well as learning about healthy eating and finding out more about the school dinner provision in Leicester.
City Catering is continually working to improve meals for all city students and launched a new menu last year. Menus change each term to offer children a varied choice of dishes.
The Student Chef of the Year competition is in its fourth year, is organised in partnership with City Catering and the Healthy Schools Programme and sponsored by the Leicester Tigers and the Co-op Midlands.
