Specials offer reassurance in Braunstone
Posted on 23/06/08

Special Constables are playing an important role in Braunstone, helping to reduce anti-social behaviour and reassure members of the community.
Each week a team of Specials from Braunstone Police Station run Operation North Star - an initiative to combat anti-social behaviour and specifically the illegal use of motorcycles and mini motos on roads and parks on the estate.
The operation uses a combination of high visibility and covert policing, carried out entirely by voluntary members of the Special Constabulary.
Special Constable Phil Smith said: "It's great to be involved in a planned operation of this kind as it is different to the routine patrols and duties that Specials are normally tasked with.
"We have noticed a reduction in anti-social behaviour associated with mini motos as a result of targeted patrols and all the good multi-agency work that is going on in Braunstone, such as the launch of the Mini Moto Club.
"However, we have found that our presence is also serving as a deterrent for other anti social behaviour, especially on Braunstone Park, as is also reassuring for members of the community.
"We have had a number of successes over the past few weeks including recovering a stolen motorcycle before the owner even realised it had been stolen and assisting the Fire Service at the scene of an arson attack on the park. We have also made arrests in connection with drugs offences, drink driving and burglary."
Sergeant Dave Stevenson from Braunstone Police Station said: "The Specials involved in Operation North Star are a real asset to the local policing unit. They are complementing the work of the neighbourhood policing teams in the area by providing visibility and reassurance to the community."
Specials come from a variety of backgrounds and are required to volunteer at least four hours of their time each week for Leicestershire Constabulary. They have the same powers as regular officers, wear the same uniform and receive full training in many aspects of police work including powers of arrest, preparing evidence for court and self defence.
For more information about the Special Constabulary visit the Force website www.leics.police.uk and click on the Careers section. Alternatively you can attend a Specials recruiting seminar at Force Headquarters in Enderby on Monday July 14 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. For more information call Leicestershire Constabulary's recruiting department on 0116 222 2222 extension 2062.
