School kitchen opens
Posted on 23/06/08

A NEW state-ofthe-art school kitchen and community caf are opening at a city school.
Work on the 450,000 school kitchen and a 95,000 community cafe was completed at Caldecote Community Primary School in Braunstone at the beginning of the summer term.
Cllr Vi Dempster, cabinet lead for children and schools, will join teachers, pupils and member of the community to formally open the new facilities on Wednesday (25th) at 11.30am.
Previously the school received hot meals from another school in the city. However, now that the new facilities have opened, food is made and served on the premises.
Cllr Dempster said: I am delighted to open the new kitchen and am particularly pleased that the school has introduced a family service approach where year five and six pupils serve food to other children.
I hope that these initiatives will encourage the take up of our excellent school meal service.
The schools community caf will be completely self-funded, with money made through sales ploughed back into the business.
Hazel Pulley, headteacher at Caldecote Community Primary School, said: The idea behind the cafe is to promote healthy eating, education and involvement in the school, as a relaxed wholesome experience where all are welcome and where dialogue around education and school life is seen and heard as a good thing.
This I feel is key if we are to nurture and kindle back local people and parents' interest in education.
Each month the school will hold drop-in days where agencies such as the police and social workers will be available to talk to the community.
The caf will open from 8.50am 4pm each weekday during term time with people being able to choose from a selection of hot and cold drinks and healthy and nutritious meal options.
During the official opening the school drumming group and singers will be on hand to perform while pupils will serve tasters of the food available.
For more information about school meals in Leicester, parents should speak to their childs teacher, visit www.leicester.gov.uk/schooldinners or contact City Catering on 0116 233 3038.
