Clean up days planned for St Matthews Estate

Posted on 23/06/08

Residents in St Matthews are being asked to suggest areas of their estate that could benefit from a clean up.

The St Matthews neighbourhood policing team is planning a two-day clean up operation on the estate in August in conjunction with The Contact Project, the St Matthews Housing Office and Leicester City Council's Parks Services.

The aim is to bring together young people, local residents and other volunteers to assist with the clean up and to encourage them to take pride in their estate.

Sergeant Gemma Hudson from the St Matthews neighbourhood team said: "We would really like members of the community to tell us the areas that they think need cleaning up, as they are the ones that will benefit. We are also appealing for any volunteers who would like to take part in the big clean up on Monday August 4 and Tuesday August 5.

"Cleaning up an area can be a simple task but one that can have a really positive impact on the community and the way in which they view their neighbourhood. By involving young people, through The Contact Project, we also hope to get them involved in a positive activity which will hopefully increase pride in the estate and deter anti-social behaviour."

The Contact Project is a community initiative that works with children and young people between the ages of five and 19 who live on the St Matthews Estate. Project manager Nikki O'Brien said: "St Matthews has a very positive and proud community. This is something that the young people want, and are more than willing, to be a part of."

Abdi Mohamoid, who is 19, said: "It's a great opportunity for us to work alongside the police and clean up our community together, because we are all proud to be living here."

To nominate an area of St Matthews for a clean up operation, please call Sgt Gemma Hudson on 0116 295 4740 or Jean Williams at the Tenants Association on Manitoba Road on 0116 253 2426.
