Moto GP at Donington Park expected to bring heavy traffic

Posted on 19/06/08

Large volumes of traffic are expected on the motorway and road network in the north of Leicestershire this weekend as the British Motorcycle Grand Prix gets underway at Donington Park.

The event, which runs from Friday 20 June to Sunday 22 June 2008, is expected to attract up to 100,000 people across the three days - 65,000 of those on Sunday.

The police have been working closely with the organisers of the event, the Highways Agency and East Midlands Airport (EMA) to ensure that a comprehensive traffic management system is in place to minimise delays. The traffic plan is designed to make it easier for spectators to get in and out of Donington Park, and to reduce delays experienced by other road users in the area.

Under the plan, car and motorcycle traffic will be separated, leaving the motorway at different junctions, to reduce congestion at junctions 24 and 23A of the M1 and make the journey to and from the venue easier. On race day (Sunday 22 June) a one-way system will also be in place on the A453 which runs past the circuit.

Leicestershire Constabulary is urging motorcyclists and motorists to follow the dedicated routes, which have been carefully worked out to facilitate the free flow of traffic.

Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire local policing unit said: "We have worked closely with the organisers of the event and we are pleased with the current traffic plans. They are the same as those adopted last year and the year before and they worked well on both occasions.

"It will be necessary to instigate one way systems and road closures. These will be clearly sign posted with diversion routes in operation; it is particularly important that visitors follow the dedicated routes and do not take short cuts or alternatives."

"We also want to remind motorcyclists and motorists to drive carefully to and from the venue to avoid any unnecessary accidents blocking the routes. It would also be wise to avoid the area if you are not going to the event."

"There will inevitably be some congestion on the roads around the circuit and I would ask everyone to remain patient and calm."

Any passengers travelling to Nottingham East Midlands Airport are advised to check in at least two hours before departure.

During the three-day event, updated information will be provided proactively to the producers of traffic bulletins at radio stations and traffic information websites.
