Visitors to the Motorcycle Grand Prix are urged to think about bike security

Posted on 17/06/08

Bikers planning on going to this year's British Motorcycle Grand Prix at Donington Park in Leicestershire are being urged to think about security after 8 bikes were stolen during last year's event.

The GP Moto attracts crowds of up to 130,000 over three days, many of whom come on their bikes. This year's event is being heldfrom Friday 20 June 2008 to Sunday 22 June 2008.Police officers will be at Donington this year reminding people to make sure their bikes are secure and fitted with a suitable security device. However, last year none of the bikes were stolen from the Park itself they were taken from hotels around Donington.

DC Kev Walker said; "We had 8 bikes stolen last year, all of them were high performance models and one of them was a Suzuki GXR 1000 worth about seven and a half thousand pounds. Stolen bikes are usual broken down into parts and it is rare that they are ever recovered and returned to their owners. None of the 8 bikes taken last year have been found.

"I'd like to urge bikers to think about the security of their bikes before they come. Bring strong, good quality locks with you and think about adding an immobiliser and other security devices if you haven't already got them. We really recommend that bikers use an electronic identification system to mark their bikes because they act as a great deterrent to thieves.

"When you are away from home, the security of your bike might not be the first thing you think about, but getting home without your bike might be a problem so it really is worth adopting a few easy steps to deter bike thieves who are likely to target events where there are a lot of motorbikes."

BIKE SECURITY TIPS

  • If your motorbike or scooter doesn't already have one, get aThatcham'- or Sold Secure'- approved electronic immobiliser professionally fitted. Try to get one which is also approved by your insurance company.
  • Use an electronic identification system such as Datatag to permanently mark and protect your bike and its parts.
  • Get the main parts of your machine marked with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) (frame number), registration number or postcode.
  • If you have a security device, use it and keep your keys with you when you leave your machine.
  • Always put the steering lock on.
  • Never leave your keys with the motorbike or scooter, even for a short time. Always keep your keys in a safe place.
  • Wherever possible, use parking spaces which are built especially for motorbikes and have stands or security loops for you to secure your machine to. Also, look for secured motorbike or scooter parking spaces in public car parks which are in the police-approved Secure Car Parks' scheme.
  • Cover your machine if possible.
  • Whenever possible, avoid leaving your helmet or other possessions on the motorbike or scooter or in luggage space on panniers.

The police have a text messaging and email service aimed at gathering crime prevention information from people attending this year's British Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The service has been launched to encourage visitors to give the police information about crime related matters in advance of the event at Donington Park. Intelligence officers are particularly keen to receive information about potential bike thieves.

Anyone with information can text police' and then their message to 86688 or email kevin.walker@leicestershire.pnn.police.co.uk or they can call Crimestoppers which is free and anonymous* on 0800 555 111.
