Youth Games to begin

A SQUAD of young Leicester sportsmen and women who will take on competitors from across the county in a prestigious contest is due to be announced.

The line-up of 150 sporting youngsters taking part in the annual Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Games will be officially announced at a special event on Monday, June 16, at Braunstone Leisure Centre, from 6.30-8.30pm.

Youngsters will represent the city in sports including rugby, netball, swimming, table tennis and athletics.

Guest speakers at the launch event will include Special Olympian Tom Styles and volunteering director, Lynn Senior.

The games will take place over two days in state-of-the-art sporting facilities in Loughborough, and will involve teams from each of Leicestershire and Rutlands boroughs competing against each other.

On Friday, June 20, youngsters will take part in a boccia contest a sport similar to bowls at Loughborough Leisure Centre from 10am to 2pm.

The main events take place on Sunday, June 22, with a huge range of sporting competitions taking place in Loughborough University, Loughborough Leisure Centre and Loughborough College, from 10am to 3.30pm.

The contest which is now in its 10th year aims to bring together teams from across the county. All those taking part have gone through a rigorous training programme and selection process.

CITY council leader Ross Willmott has welcomed the governmentâ s announcement that it is to fund free swimming for everyone by 2012.

The Government has announced plans for free swimming to be introduced in phases over the next four years in a move to encourage more participation in sport and to make healthy exercise accessible to more people.

Initially, swimming will be made free for over-60s â a policy which Leicester City Council introduced at its own pools two years ago â before being extended to include free swimming for all children and adults by 2012.

Cllr Willmott said: â This is absolutely excellent news. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can take â and itâ s fun.

â We are proud that Leicester was ahead of the game in offering free swimming to over-60s two years ago, and are glad to see plans to extend that offer to children and eventually all adults too.
