Distraction burglary at a home on Perth Avenue

Police are appealing for information following a distraction burglary at a home on Perth Avenue.
The incident happened at around 6pm on Friday May 23, 2008 when the elderly victim, a man in his eighties, answered the door to a man claiming to be from a security company and was selling window alarms.
Whilst inside the property, the victim agreed to pay the man a fee for installing the alarms. The man followed the victim to where he keeps his money and took the agreed fee from him.
The man then asked the victim to stay in the back of the property to listen out for banging noises whilst he went into another room.
The victim could not hear anything and became suspicious. He went to investigate and saw the man run from the property and get into the passenger seat of a red car which drove off towards
The victim later discovered the man had stolen the rest of the money he kept in the house and some paperwork.
The suspect has been described as white with a tanned complexion. He is of large build and had a round face. He is between 5'5" and 5'10" tall and had dark hair. He had an earring in his left ear and was wearing a blue anorak and jeans.
PC Lisa Wood, who is investigating this incident, said: "The victim has obviously been left shaken and upset.He had been saving this money for a holiday and is going to find it very difficult to replace it. He allowed this man into his home thinking that he was there to help him to secure his property and is very angry that he has been conned by him.
"Sadly there are people out there who can try to con their way into your home. Fitting, and using, a door chain or spy hole to the front door will help you to check who the caller is before opening and if they cannot produce an official identity card then do not let them in. You can even ring the company they say they are from to confirm their identity.
"A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID before you let them into your home. If you are in any doubt contact the police.
"If you have any information about this incident, remember seeing a man fitting this description in the area at this time or perhaps received a visit from someone in similar circumstances, please contact us."
